Introduction: Recidivism or, habitual relapses into crime, has time and time again proven to be an issue among delinquents, which thereby increases the overall juvenile prison population. This issue has become more prevalent than what we realize. Unless a unit for measuring a juvenile’s risk of recidivism is enacted and used to determine a system to promote effective prevention, than the juvenile prison population will continue to increase. Our court system should not only focus on punishing the said juvenile but also enforce a program or policy that will allow for prevention of recidivism. So the question remains, how can recidivism in the juvenile prison population be prevented so that it is no longer the central cause for increased†¦show more content†¦Not only this but, â€Å"offenders who commit new offenses after court contact are at risk for a variety of poor developmental and life course outcomes, including school failure, out of home placements, occupation al marginality, and long-term involvement in criminal activity† (Schwalbe 2004). As seen here, this is a downward spiral. Active reform has never before been at such a demand. As recidivism and juvenile delinquency continues to increase, not only will national crime rates and juvenile prison populations inflate, but the diminishing of an educated, safe, and economically stable society will also be affected regrettably. If juveniles whom continue to commit repeat criminal offenses lack school initiative, family support, and job exposure, than relatively as recidivism and juvenile criminal activity increases, our nation’s standard of living will consequently lower. For those who are simply interested in the costs, it may be fairly surprising. It is a common and misconceived ideal that incarceration is a cheap and easy way to contain criminals, in this case juveniles. However, due to the fact that the incarceration itself has not in any way hindered criminal activity rates or decreased juvenile recidivism, taxpayers are simply investing more money into these detention facilities and court proceedings than what is realized. Causes of and Treatments for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease in the U.S. is a widely known debilitating disease that effects the upper and lower motor neurons in the nervous system. The degeneration of the upper and lower motor neurons in turn cause muscle atrophy and chronic loss of muscle use. ALS is the most common of the five motor neuron disease. Heredity is a major cause of ALS but can show up in any patients. ALS usually presents itself in late middle age but can show up in children and even young adults. The cause of ALS is not known. It seems to be caused by a genetic mutation, but the mutation has to have an environmental trigger to cause the disease. In the past the disease was believed to have one cause, but that does not hold true to current findings. The majority of ALS cases are sporadic in nature and can pop up anywhere, but 5 to 10 percent of cases has some sort of heredity involved. What is interesting is th at sporadic ALS and familial ALS may have the same genetic mutation and the environment is the key factor in contracting the disease. Some of the signs and symptoms of Lou Gehrig’s disease is loss of voluntary muscle use. Cramping and twitching is common as the degrading axons become damaged and cannot transmit the action potential needed to muscle contraction. Jerzy Kosinski’s Being There is the story of Chance Gardener, a man with limited mental and social potential, yet raised by his environment to the level of fame. Referred to as a â€Å"blank page† person, he is, at the same time, seen by his immediate environment as â€Å"quite a personality† mainly because of his exterior qualities: he has a â€Å"beautiful voice†, is â€Å"manly† and â€Å"well-groomed†. Not only the Manhattan society, in which Chance finds himself after being hit by a car knows nothing about Gardiner’s past: the reader is also faced with the same puzzle. It remains a riddle for both the lawyer who comes to handle the estate and the reader why Chance was left out of the records. For all that, this riddle appears to serve as a good tool for creating suspense in the account of the hero’s changed life style after the accident. With no social and family connections whatsoever Gardiner becomes the center of attention among the educated high class society of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Rand. He soon meets the US President and a number of political and corporate figures, and becomes â€Å"a strong candidate for one of the vacant seats on the board of the First American Financial Corporation† (35). The developments that follow appear hilarious as none of the persons Gardiner gets acquainted with is aware of his physical disabilities. Two aspects that â€Å"save† his positive image are his interest in television and love for gardening. The first helps him think of proper ways to behave in social situations and the latter is a basis for the only factual knowledge he can refer to when participating in discussions about American economy. For instance, when engaging in conversations with Mrs. Rand â€Å"Chance resorted to repeating to her parts of her own sentences, a practice he had observed on TV. In this fashion he encouraged her to continue and elaborate† (24). Also, during a meal Chance ignored the wine because â€Å"On TV, wine put people in a state they could not control† (26). Later, when invited to participate in a TV show, Gardiner could experience the making of a program personally: â€Å"Chance was astonished that television could portray itself; cameras watched themselves†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (37). Similarly, his story about seasons and growth in the garden during his meeting with the President led to his being recognized as an expert in the field of economics. Towards the end of the novel the suspense is even greater when the President keeps demanding that his administration provides him with background information about Chance. However, they are unable to find out anything substantial. Mass media is also concerned about the lack of such information. However, Chance’s future looks positive especially with the death of Benjamin Rand. Mrs. Rand is very much in love with Gardiner and sincerely hopes he will stay with her after her husband’s death. Gardiner appears to also have acquired a certain image in the public eye, which will not be easily shattered in case politicians find out who he really is. On numerous occasions Gardiner was very explicit about his disabilities to write and read, but the public interpreted it in its own way, the â€Å"wishful thinking† way. Once John had left for his fathers, he had left his wife to paint the house unsupervised, unfortunately that wasnt the only thing he left unsupervised. After hours of loneliness, Steven had finally shown up. He assured Ann that John wouldnt be coming home, and if anything happened between them, no-one would find out. He offered himself throughout the night, and kept reassuring that John wouldnt be coming. Finally, Ann gave in, and they had slept together. But Ann saw some sha dows that she though could have been John, but ruled them out as a dream. In the morning, the curtain that was hung over the door was loose, from the so called wind. But when John was found later that day, it was assumed that he had died because of the cold, and wasnt going in the right direction. But when Ann examined the body, she noticed the paint on Johns hand which came from the wet paint on the door, which means he was in the shadows, and he loosened the curtains, and most importantly, saw the affair in action. Which means he meant to be walking in the direction he was found. ...

They trace this failure down to specifically secondary schools, as the skills and confidence that they consider lacking in the adults of today, are those, which one is supposed to acquire in secondary school (Anderman and Maehr, pp. 287, 1994). One example of this failure was published in the press release in the UK, when FSB Education Chairman Collin Williams pointed out how, "The secondary school system is not producing enough sixteen year-olds that can hit the ground running on their first day in the world of work† (Politics.co.uk, 2007). He explained that he thinks that the British GCSE examination system helps to hide this failure until the student has graduated and is searching employment. However, the truth reveals itself once these students are employed and conducting their duties. The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) reports the shocking statistics: almost ten percent of the businesses have trouble in finding people to hire who have the required mathematical and literacy skills. The recruits often need training after they are hired, so that they may be taught again, things that they were supposed to have learnt in secondary schools. Apart from this, the FSB also reports the woes of several businesses, who complain about the laws and regulations, which are governing these education policies. They say that when the government changes the minimum working age to eighteen, it should expect a benefit out of this only if it corrects the secondary school system first. According to them, these students will not stand any more a chance of pleasing their employers at the age of 18 than at the age of 16, if they will still receive schooling through the secondary schooling system. They suggest that the secondary schools keep in mind the requirements that the children’s future employers will have of them, before commencing to educate them. They raise this suggestion in the light of the fact that the students, which organizations are currently hiring were not educated with these requirements in mind, which is why they fail to please most employers who entrust them with jobs ((Politics.co.uk, 2007). In addition, one can deduce that the failure of a student to be able to do so can be traced down to the failure of his secondary school. This is because it was a function of the secondary school, as mentioned earlier, to prepare the student for his or her future, may it be as an employee or a university student. Moreover, if this is lacking in the student, then one may blame the secondary schools for this failure. Another aim, which a child has from secondary school, is the need to socialize. A child attends secondary school during the ages of 11 to 1 6 (Vlaardingerbroek, & Taylor, pp. 30, 2009). At this age, a child learns to meet new people, and discover the different kinds of people that are present around him. He starts to discover himself, and figures out what his personality is like. He learns about himself, learns to like himself enough to present himself to the world for acceptance. Equally important, he learns to accept and bear rejection.
