More specifically, I encourage students toavoid using very common adjectiveslike good or big. These can easily be replaced with something more infrequent.Lexical Complexity Word Length (perhaps 4% of score)Students are rewarded for using longer words. This is fairly straightforward.Positive Features (Collocations and Prepositions) (perhaps 3% of score)First of all, students are rewarded for collocation use. The e-rater identifies thenumber of good collocations [divided by] the total number of words (source). So, more collocations equals a higher score. Obviously it is hard to prepare students for this, but if they are aware that it is a factor, they can be encouraged to use advanced words that are more closely related to the general theme of the given prompt. For example, if the prompt is related to university life I encourage them to use some advanced words related specifically to attending university.Grammar (7% of score)The grammar macrofeature is broken down into nine microfeatures. All of these features are weighted equally to produce the grammar score. Microfeaturepenalties are determined by dividing the number of related errors by the total number of words in the entire essay. The microfeatures are listed below. At first glance one would think that ETS is being generous by assigning ten percent of the total score to mechanics but it isnt such a giveaway afterall. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease in the U.S. is a widely known debilitating disease that effects the upper and lower motor neurons in the nervous system. The degeneration of the upper and lower motor neurons in turn cause muscle atrophy and chronic loss of muscle use. ALS is the most common of the five motor neuron disease. Heredity is a major cause of ALS but can show up in any patients. ALS usually presents itself in late middle age but can show up in children and even young adults. The cause of ALS is not known. It seems to be caused by a genetic mutation, but the mutation has to have an environmental trigger to cause the disease. In the past the disease was believed to have one cause, but that does not hold true to current findings. The majority of ALS cases are sporadic in nature and can pop up anywhere, but 5 to 10 percent of cases has some sort of heredity involved. What is interesting is th at sporadic ALS and familial ALS may have the same genetic mutation and the environment is the key factor in contracting the disease. Some of the signs and symptoms of Lou Gehrig’s disease is loss of voluntary muscle use. Cramping and twitching is common as the degrading axons become damaged and cannot transmit the action potential needed to muscle contraction. He soon meets the US President and a number of political and corporate figures, and becomes â€Å"a strong candidate for one of the vacant seats on the board of the First American Financial Corporation† (35). The developments that follow appear hilarious as none of the persons Gardiner gets acquainted with is aware of his physical disabilities. Two aspects that â€Å"save† his positive image are his interest in television and love for gardening. The first helps him think of proper ways to behave in social situations and the latter is a basis for the only factual knowledge he can refer to when participating in discussions about American economy. For instance, when engaging in conversations with Mrs. Rand â€Å"Chance resorted to repeating to her parts of her own sentences, a practice he had observed on TV. In this fashion he encouraged her to continue and elaborate† (24). Also, during a meal Chance ignored the wine because â€Å"On TV, wine put people in a state they could not control† (26). Later, when invited to participate in a TV show, Gardiner could experience the making of a program personally: â€Å"Chance was astonished that television could portray itself; cameras watched themselves†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (37). Similarly, his story about seasons and growth in the garden during his meeting with the President led to his being recognized as an expert in the field of economics. Towards the end of the novel the suspense is even greater when the President keeps demanding that his administration provides him with background information about Chance. However, they are unable to find out anything substantial. Mass media is also concerned about the lack of such information. However, Chance’s future looks positive especially with the death of Benjamin Rand. Mrs. Rand is very much in love with Gardiner and sincerely hopes he will stay with her after her husband’s death. Gardiner appears to also have acquired a certain image in the public eye, which will not be easily shattered in case politicians find out who he really is. On numerous occasions Gardiner was very explicit about his disabilities to write and read, but the public interpreted it in its own way, the â€Å"wishful thinking† way. But Ann saw some sha dows that she though could have been John, but ruled them out as a dream. In the morning, the curtain that was hung over the door was loose, from the so called wind. But when John was found later that day, it was assumed that he had died because of the cold, and wasnt going in the right direction. But when Ann examined the body, she noticed the paint on Johns hand which came from the wet paint on the door, which means he was in the shadows, and he loosened the curtains, and most importantly, saw the affair in action. They say that when the government changes the minimum working age to eighteen, it should expect a benefit out of this only if it corrects the secondary school system first. According to them, these students will not stand any more a chance of pleasing their employers at the age of 18 than at the age of 16, if they will still receive schooling through the secondary schooling system. They suggest that the secondary schools keep in mind the requirements that the children’s future employers will have of them, before commencing to educate them. In addition, one can deduce that the failure of a student to be able to do so can be traced down to the failure of his secondary school. Ticks will be collected from areas in the five counties in the state where Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections are prevalent. Trapping sites will be set in known tick habitats in the five counties to help in trapping and collecting small animals, including the target pests. Sherman live-traps baited with oatmeal and peanut-butter will be set at the sites to ensnare the ticks. All captured animals will be regularly and carefully examined to allow the researchers to extract as many ticks as possible. The trapping of animals and extraction of ticks from the captured animals will take about four weeks. All ticks collected will be placed in vials containing 75% ethanol and sent to parasitology laboratories. The screening process will be done through MasTag polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a multiplication method, which is known for its fast and economic screening of tick-borne pathogens. PCR is also known for efficient and accurate screening of ticks for polymicrobial contagion.
